On Dec 02-03, 2023, Workshop on Hierarchy and Social Justice in the Modern World, hosted by the Fudan Institute for Advanced Study in Social Sciences (Fudan IAS), was held in Fudan University. 22 scholars from China, the USA, UK, France, the Canada, etc. attended the workshop.
Prof. Sujian Guo, Dean and Distinguished Professor of Fudan IAS, delivered the opening speech. Prof. Guo welcomed the scholars attending the workshop and introduced an overview of Fudan IAS. He said that Fudan IAS has been focusing on and promoting the research on global justice, social justice and other related topics. The purpose of this workshop is to provide a platform for Chinese and foreign scholars to exchange ideas on general fundamental theoretical and philosophical issues of hierarchical order and social justice.
The first session, Hierarchy and Its Justifications, was chaired by Adrian Vermeule, Ralph S. Tyler, Jr. Professor of Constitutional Law at Harvard Law School. Prof. Daniel A. Bell and Ass. Prof. Pei Wang from the University of Hong Kong talked on Confucian Rituals and Social Harmony. Yves Sintomer, Professor of Political Science at the University of Paris 8 and Distinguished Professor at the University of Oxford, gave a speech on To What Extent can Political Hierarchies be Justified?.
Prof. Daniel A. Bell from the University of Hong Kong chaired the second session on Hierarchy in Classical and Modern Discourses". Prof. Carlos Fraenkel from McGill University talked on Ship of Fools? Plato's Political Thinking Reconsidered. Prof. Jean-Marc Coicaud from Rutgers University made a presentation entitled How to Make Hierarchy Legitimate Today?.
Prof. Yves Sintomer, Professor of Political Science at the University of Paris 8 and Distinguished Professor at the University of Oxford, chaired the third session on Hierarchy, Political Party and the State. Prof. Adrian Vermeule from Harvard Law School gave a speech on The Constitution of Hierarchy. Prof. Daniel Weinstock from McGill University spoke on In Defense of Hierarchy within Political Parties.
Prof. Daniel Weinstock then chaired the fourth session Hierarchies Past and Present. Prof. Yves Schemeil from Sciences Po Grenoble made a presentation entitled Acceptable hierarchies: Epistemic democracy in Europe and the Middle East? . Prof. Chantal Delsol from Gustave Eiffel University talked on Hierarchy: an Unloved Necessity. Prof. Zhengxu Wang from Zhejiang University gave a speech on Just Meritocracy as Just Hierarchy: A Take on the Regime Type Question.
The fifth session on Hierarchy from the Perspective of Equality and Social Justice was chaired by Ass. Prof. Pei Wang from Hong Kong University. Prof. Emmanuel Picavet from the University of Paris 8. talked on Hierarchy, Equity and Authority. Prof. Xi Lin from Fudan IAS talked on Hierarchy, the Fragility of Goodness and Social Justice.
Prof. Xi Lin chaired the last part of the workshop: roundtable discussion on Hierarchy: Justifications, Critiques, and Social Justice. Then Ass. Prof. Pei Wang and Prof. Daniel A. Bell summarized the workshop. At last, the moderator thanked the scholars for attending and the workshop ended with a round of applause.
