From July 04 to 06, 2023, the International Conference on Applied Data Science hosted by Fudan Institute for Advanced Study in Social Sciences (Fudan IAS) was held at the Center for American Studies of Fudan University.
The conference attracted more than 80 scholars from 11 countries and regions, including China, the US, Canada, the UK, Hong Kong, etc., and more than 20 scholars chose to participate online. A total of 59 reports were presented in real time during the six sessions over three days, including 15 regular presentations and 44 speed talks. There were also another 10 video presentations shown to the participants.
At the beginning of the conference, Prof. Sujian Guo, Dean and Distinguished Professor of Fudan IAS, delivered an opening speech. In the opening remarks, Prof. Guo particularly emphasized the significance of the application of data science in various disciplines, especially its deep integration with social science research. He pointed out that in this data-driven era, data science has permeated every aspect of our lives, and its the application in various fields. In addition to the traditional data application fields such as medicine, engineering, and economics, the integration of data science with other disciplinary fields of social sciences is also of far-reaching significance. Prof. Guo stated that social sciences are concerned with the patterns, regularities, and laws of human behavior and society, while data science provides us with a new perspective and tools. For example, in sociological research, we can not only predict social trends more accurately, but also dig deeper into the behavioral patterns of the population through big data analysis, thus providing more accurate data support for policy making. Finally, Prof. Guo concluded that through this international conference, we seek to strengthen international academic exchanges, and improve our academic influence and status of applied data science at home and abroad.
Prof. Zhiyong Zhang, President of International Society for Data Science and Analytics and Professor of the Department of Psychology, University of Notre Dame, then delivered his speech.
Prof. Zhang firstly expressed his gratitude to all participants for their submissions and support, and also thanked Fudan IAS for the organization of the conference. He pointed out that the conference is of great significance in promoting academic research and technology development of data science. He said that it is an event to display high-end academic achievements, and participants' research achievements and innovative technologies of data science will be presented later during the conference; it is an event for academic cooperation and exchange, which provides a valuable platform for experts and scholars in this field to share their experiences and insights, and establish cooperation; it is an event for new technology learning, where participants can learn the latest data analysis methods to improve their research ability and level.
The conference reports then started, with four regular reports and three speed talks in the morning session on July 4th:
