Since 2012, the IAS-Fudan and the School of Public Administration at Zhejiang University as the mainland organizers, and the School of Social Sciences and the Department of Political Science at the National Taiwan University as the Taiwan organizers, have jointly held the “Advanced Summer Workshops in Social Sciences” with the financial support of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange. Each year this workshop recruits 28 trainees from the mainland and Taiwan region, and in rotation the two sides of the Taiwan Straits organize the event. The purposes of this workshop are to facilitate scholarly exchanges and cooperation between young scholars in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, to enhance their abilities to grasp world trends and develop and apply theoretical paradigms and research methodologies of social sciences, to cultivate their “question-driven and interdisciplinary” research skills, and to deepen their theoretical understanding of various problems in the transitional period faced by the two parties of the Taiwan Straits. By doing so, we hope that a new generation of talented young scholars with strong innovation capacity and global vision can emerge. After nine successful sessions, this workshop has become a model for cross-straits scholarly exchange programs.
